What is Obesity

Nutrition starts in intra-uterine period and continues until death.Humans should consume foods sufficiently and healthily in order to grow, develop and be healthy and efficient.Daily calorie needs vary depending on age, gender, work, genetic characteristics and disease conditions.It is necessary to keep maintain caloric balance for a healthy life.Even though underlying causes of obesity cannot be completely clarified, excessive and imbalanced nutrition are important factors.Moreover, recent technological developments not only facilitate the life, but they also limit daily movements.Besides, genetic, environmental, sociocultural and psychological factors cause obesity by interacting with each other.

If daily calorie intake exceeds calorie burnt, calories that cannot be burnt are stored in body in the form of fat and cause development of obesity.Obesity is defined by World Health organization (WHO) as “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health”.As it can be understood, obesity is a disease, which develops if excessive energy secondary to positive calorie balance is stored in body in the form of fat and affects quality and length of life negatively.
